The turning point came for me when I was looking at some photographs of a meal that I went to with some friends, I did not have my glasses on and just saw a blonde blob, I asked my friend who that larger lady sat with us was as I didn’t recognise her and she told me to go and get my glasses as it was me! I just couldn’t believe that person was me!!!! Something clicked, I enrolled in Slimming World the day after and the rest they say is history. I worked so hard and am pleased to say that I am now a healthy size 10/12, weigh 10 stone and feel happier than I ever have, I also go to boxing twice a week, something I could never have dreamed of doing a few years ago. My Doctor was over the moon, he told me that all my hard work would not only pay off now, but could add years to my life.
While all this is a great story, it doesn’t mean that I still don’t feel resistance sometimes when I am sat at home after a long day, the last thing I want to do is get off my backside and go to the gym, I want to stay sat by my open fire with cake! But I don’t, and the reason that I don’t is because I want to move forward with my life not backwards.
You also may feel resistance, just as I do. And the changes you want to make may not be easy. But to be happy, we all have to stretch our comfort zones and move our lives forward. If not, we end up living the same day, day after day and calling it a life.
Don’t worry about mistakes and failures, worry about what you’re giving up if you don’t even try. If I hadn’t tried, I would still be fat, unhealthy and unhappy. Worry about the life you’re not living and the opportunities you’re forgoing, as you merely exist in the safety of your comfort zone.
Here are three good reasons to embrace change and move forward, however scary that may seem at first.
1 – Life is for living; however long you have left
If you are 18 or 80, It’s never too late to live a life that makes you proud. You only get one shot at today and you can make it great. Today is the day! There’s no age limit on changing your life, and to settle and be stuck in a life that isn’t what you want is just a waste. Even small steps are better than doing nothing at all. Time passes so make your time count.
2 – Holding on to old pain is a form of self-harm.
You have the strength and wisdom you have today because of your past and what you have learnt from it, so celebrate it. Don’t let it haunt you. Replaying a painful memory over and over in your head is a form of self-harm. Harmful thoughts create a harmful life. Make peace with yourself and your past. You are what you are because of it, and if you can survive pain and hurt and still get out of bed every day, you certainly have the strength to make positive changes.
3 – Moving on creates positive change.
You may live in an ‘I blame’ mentality, blaming everyone else for your misfortune and thinking, ’poor me, why do all these things keep happening to me?’ But think about this, the only thing those scenarios all have in common is YOU. And this is GOOD news believe it or not, it is honestly, because it means YOU alone have the power to change things, or change the way you think about things. So move on and plough that energy into something positive, reliving the past won’t change it so why waste all of that energy thinking about it, move on and concentrate on the positives. Your future is unwritten and you hold the pen.
I hope this helps!
